World Press Photo 2010: 'A dignity in the eyes'

South African photographer Jodi Bieber won the World Press Photo Award 2010 for the portrait of an Afghan woman disfigured because she had left home of her husband, announced Friday, February 11 in Amsterdam, the organizers of the photojournalism contest . The photographer David Burnett, president of the jury, explains why this photo was chosen.

Why the World Press Photo jury he chose this picture?

David Burnett: We had to make our choice among the powerful images of the earthquake in Haiti or explosions of volcanoes. But the photo of the year, he had to have an image that exudes a graphic power beyond the events. It is also not become so frequent that a portrait 'Photo of the Year'.

At one point, all board members were arrested on the same photo, one taken by Jodi Bieber. There is a powerlessness and a very high dignity in the eyes of this young woman who touched us all deeply. This is a picture that is very difficult to see.

Shows that this picture?
At the age of 14, this young woman, Bibi Aisha, was married by her family to the Taliban. After four years of abuse by her husband, she decides to flee her home, which the 'law' Taliban can not because women can not have their own opinion. Someone of his own family then came to cut off his ears and nose in retaliation. She was abandoned, badly injured, before finally finding a refuge in Kabul for battered women.

The objective of Jodi Bieber Bibi Aisha when she was photographed to show what would happen in Afghanistan if we let the power of the Taliban where they are in a position of strength. What has been won for women for eight or nine years would be lost.
